Zerain also has customs that help to establish its own individual
identity. Evidence of two of the most important of these can be found
in the main square: the holm oak and the bowling alley.
The holm oak is located in the centre
of the square and is the central meeting point and setting for the various
"public gatherings". Although in former years, the square was graced
by a large tree, in 1968 it was uprooted in a gale and was subsequently
replaced by the young tree that still draws us together for long chats
and discussions today.
As for the bowling alley, it is safe to say
that, notwithstanding its various modifications, it continues to play
an important role in the life of the inhabitants of Zerain. We are exceptionally
good at the game, and still remember the many great bowling champions
that were born and raised in our town. On the last Sunday in February,
for example, the annual Bowling Championships in memory of "Endika Alustiza"
offer bowlers an entertaining opportunity to demonstrate their skill.
