We have always been more of a family than a town. Historically, the population consisted of loyal families gathered under the protection of the Lords of Zerain, who enjoyed a high standing among the Lords of Gipuzkoa.
The first written reference to the inhabitants of Zerain appears in a document dated 20 March, 1384, giving King John I and Henry III's royal consent to the annexing of the town by its neighbour, Segura. Consequently, from that date onwards, authority was ceded to the Mayor of Segura.
