In
1615 we finally managed to break the chain which tied us to Segura.
In return for a payment of 31,364 reales, we recovered our independence
as a municipality in our own right.
Since that time, we have belonged to a
number of different communities: in 1617 we joined the San Esteban river
valley community, in 1637 the Zegama community, from 1662 to 1768 we
formed part of the Legazpia community and in 1825 we created the Artamalastegi
community.
Working in close collaboration with our
neighbouring towns and villages, but always retaining our own individual
sense of identity, Zerain has played a modest role in the history of
the Basque Country.
