Surrounded
by oak trees, Saint Blaise's Hermitage is located in a charming setting
not far from the urban centre. Similarly to all Basque hermitages, the
building combines elegance with simplicity, and has served as a centre
for prayers, supplications and popular processions since the 17th century.
It is also here that food is blessed on Saint Blaise's Day to protect
townsfolk and their animals from sore throats.
The building's most interesting features are
the holy water font, the small choir stalls and, of course, the Mudejar
railings. The iron sculpture entitled "The Ways of the Moon", by Jesus
Jauregi, is also worth noting.
The hermitage and its setting is a very special
area, in which prayer and nature combine to offer the visitor a rare
sense of peace and tranquillity.
